How Long Does Water Filter Installation Take?

One of the most common questions we get before a water filter installation booking is how long the job will take and how much disruption to expect. The honest answer depends on the type of system you’re having installed, the condition of your existing plumbing, and where the installation point needs to be. As your plumber Sydney team at All Day Plumbing, we want to give you a realistic picture before the job starts rather than vague estimates that don’t hold up on the day.

Under-Sink Water Filter Installation

An under-sink point-of-use water filter, whether a two-stage, three-stage, or reverse osmosis system, is typically the fastest installation. A straightforward installation in a home where the plumbing under the sink is in good condition and there is adequate space for the filter housing usually takes between one and two hours. The job involves:

  • Isolating the cold water supply under the sink
  • Installing a saddle valve or tee connection on the cold water supply line
  • Mounting the filter housing or multi-stage housing bracket under the sink
  • Installing the dedicated drinking water tap through the benchtop or sink (where required)
  • Connecting all tubing and fittings
  • Flushing the system and confirming flow

Reverse osmosis systems with a storage tank take slightly longer due to the tank connection and the additional tubing runs, typically adding 30 to 60 minutes. If the benchtop needs to be drilled for a new dedicated tap, this adds minor time but is standard practice.

Whole-House Water Filter Installation

A whole-house point-of-entry installation involves cutting into the main incoming supply line and is a more involved job than an under-sink installation. A single-stage whole-house sediment or carbon filter on a straightforward residential property typically takes two to three hours. A multi-stage whole-house system with pre-filter, main filter, and post-filter stages, along with isolation valves, bypass valves, and pressure gauges, will take three to four hours or longer depending on site conditions.

Factors that can extend the installation time include:

  • Access to the meter and supply line: If the incoming supply runs through a crawl space, a tight meter box area, or inside a wall cavity, access work adds time.
  • Condition of existing pipework: Old, corroded, or non-standard pipework at the connection point may require repair or modification before the filter can be installed.
  • Need for a new isolation valve: If the existing isolation valve is seized or non-compliant, it will need replacing as part of the installation.
  • Distance from the meter to the preferred installation point: On some properties, the optimal filter location requires a longer pipe run, which adds time and materials.

A professional water filter installation Sydney carried out by a licensed plumber will always include a site assessment before the job starts to identify any of these variables and price accordingly.

What Happens During the Installation

Regardless of the system type, the installation process follows a consistent sequence:

  • Site assessment: The plumber inspects the installation point, existing pipework, and space requirements before starting work.
  • Water isolation: The supply to the relevant section of pipework is shut off. For a whole-house installation, this means the full property will be without water during the installation, typically for one to two hours.
  • Connection and mounting: The filter housing is mounted, connections are made, and all fittings are torqued and sealed correctly.
  • Pressure test and flush: Once the supply is restored, the system is pressure tested for leaks at all connection points, and the filter is flushed according to manufacturer requirements before the water is declared ready for use.
  • Cartridge labelling and documentation: The installation date and cartridge type are recorded, and the property owner is advised on the replacement schedule.

How Long Will the Water Be Off?

For an under-sink installation, only the cold water supply under that sink needs to be isolated, so the rest of the home remains fully operational. For a whole-house installation, the full incoming supply will be off while the connection is made. This period is typically 30 to 60 minutes for a straightforward connection on a property with good access and sound pipework. On more complex jobs, it can extend to 90 minutes. The plumber will confirm this timeframe before starting work so you can plan around it. What About New Builds or Renovations?

If a water filter is being installed as part of a new build or renovation where the pipework is already exposed and the installation point is clearly accessible, installation time is typically shorter because there is no need to work around existing finished surfaces. In these situations, integrating the filter housing into the plumbing rough-in is the most efficient approach, and the job can often be completed in under an hour once the plumbing is ready.
