Recent hot water repairs

Glenwood, September 2026: rusty water fixed with a service, not a new heater

There was a little rust in the hot water. The system was a Rheem Stellar gas storage unit, a model built to be serviced and to have its parts replaced. So instead of fitting a new heater, we serviced it: we flushed the tank, replaced the anodes and drained the rusty water out. The water ran clear again.

Dulwich Hill, August 2026: lukewarm water from a 2011 Rinnai

The Rinnai gas storage system had been in since 2011, and its hot water had gone tepid. We replaced the tempering valve, the part that mixes cold and hot water to give a safe 50°C. That brought the hot water back.

Guildford, July 2026: no hot water, and no charge

A tenant had no hot water, and the managing agent asked us for a quote. Our plumber found the heater in working order, with its ignition switched off. He relit it and tested it, and as nothing needed repairing, there was no charge.

What our hot water repair customers say

“Our hot water stopped working and Johnny from All Day Plumbing came out and diagnosed the problem straight away. He fixed the issue efficiently and had our hot water back up and running the same day. Very professional service and a great bloke to deal with.”

Christian, Google review, 2026

“We had a hot water heater leaking badly and needed it sorted urgently. Johnny came out, found the problem and replaced the faulty parts. He did a high-quality job and made sure everything was working properly before leaving. Very happy with the service.”

Hot water problems we fix

  • No hot water at all. Possible causes include a pilot light that has gone out, a tripped circuit, or a failed element, thermostat or gas valve.
  • Water that is lukewarm or runs out quickly. A faulty part, a leak in the hot water pipes or a system too small for the household can all cause it. Our article on why water takes too long to heat covers more.
  • Water that is too hot. A faulty thermostat or tempering valve can cause it, and it is a scalding risk.
  • A leaking tank or leaking pipes. Water around the base, a rusty patch or a puddle in the garage. More on emergency hot water.
  • A relief valve that won’t stop running. Some dripping while the water heats is normal, but a steady flow needs checking.
  • A pilot light that won’t stay lit on a gas storage system. A worn thermocouple is one possible cause. See our gas hot water page.
  • An instant unit showing an error code. Write the code down before you call, because it tells us where to start. Our instant gas hot water page has more on these units.
  • Rusty, smelly or noisy hot water. Possible causes include a worn anode, sediment in the tank or a failing valve.

Not sure whether your system runs on gas or electricity? Our guide on how to tell if your water heater uses gas or electricity takes a minute to read. If your hot water has stopped altogether, start with what to check when your hot water isn’t working.

Repair or replace?

A repair makes sense when the tank is sound and a part has failed. That part might be an element, a thermostat, a thermocouple, a valve or a gas control. A new system is worth pricing when the tank itself leaks or an older system keeps failing. It is also worth pricing when one repair would cost a large share of a new system.

If replacing it makes more sense, you can price a new system in our tool, installation included. More on hot water replacement.

How a repair works

  1. Phone us on 1300 301 354. Someone answers 24/7.
  2. Tell us about the system. The brand, gas or electric, roughly how old it is and what it is doing.
  3. We book an arrival window with you. The plumber calls ahead, and most repairs are done the same day.
  4. We find the fault and quote a fixed price for the repair. Work only begins once you agree. If a repair isn’t worth it, we say so, and you can check replacement prices in the tool.
  5. We repair it and test it. We check the water temperature, the relief valve and, on gas systems, the gas connections.
  6. We clean up and show you what failed.

What does a hot water repair cost?

Every repair gets a fixed price before any work starts. The price depends on which part has failed, what kind of system you have and the access to it.

There’s no call-out fee from Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm. The free visit covers the trip out and a hand-tool check of 10 minutes or so to find the fault. You then get a fixed price for the repair, and any further testing is quoted before it is done.

Outside those hours, including weekends and public holidays, a call-out costs between $275 and $385 including GST. You’ll hear the exact amount when you call. It pays for the trip and around 10 minutes spent finding the fault. Small fixes are included too, like relighting a gas heater. In most cases, so is making a leaking system safe. A repair beyond that is priced at our normal rates, with no after-hours loading.

If you are leaning towards a new system, our price tool gives installed prices straight away, with no name, email or phone number needed.

Keep your hot water running

  • Ease the relief valve lever as the maker’s manual says. One major maker asks for this at least every six months.
  • Check around the unit for water now and then, so a leak is caught early.
  • Watch for early signs, such as rust at the base, a damp floor or water that takes longer to heat.
  • Book a service as the system ages. One major maker recommends a service every five years, with a new relief valve and anode. Where the water’s total dissolved solids exceed 600 mg/L, it says every three years. More on hot water servicing.

Hot water repair questions

Why have I got no hot water?

On an electric system, check that its circuit breaker at the switchboard has not tripped. On a gas system, check whether your other gas appliances work and whether the pilot light is out. On an instant unit, check that the power point is on and note any error code. If none of that explains it, call us.

Can you fix my hot water today?

Usually, yes. Our phone line, 1300 301 354, is answered day and night, and we’ll give you a time window for the plumber.

Is it worth repairing an old hot water system?

If the tank is sound and the fault is a part, a repair can cost far less than a new system. If the tank leaks, the system keeps failing or the repair is a big share of a new one, compare replacement prices first. We tell you which way we would go and why.

My hot water system is leaking. What should I do?

Turn off the electricity or gas to the unit, and shut the cold water isolating valve on its inlet pipe. Don’t touch the switchboard if there is water near it. Stand back from the relief valve drain, since the water coming out can scald.

Why is the relief valve dripping?

A little water from the relief valve drain while the system heats is normal. Water that keeps running, or runs when the system is not heating, can mean a problem with the valve or the system. Have it checked.

Why does my hot water run out so quickly?

The household may be using more hot water than the system was sized for. A leak in the hot water pipes or a fault in the heating parts can also cause it. A check on site can show which one it is.

Why is my hot water too hot?

When a water heater is installed or replaced in NSW, hot water to showers, baths and basins must be limited to 50°C. A tempering valve is one device that does this. If your water is scalding, the valve or the thermostat may have failed, so have it checked.

What should I have ready when I call?

The brand and model, whether it runs on gas or electricity, its rough age and what it is doing. A photo of the label on the side of the unit helps us bring the right parts.

How long should a hot water system last?

That varies with the type of system, your water quality and how well it is looked after. One major maker brings its five-yearly service forward to every three years where total dissolved solids exceed 600 mg/L. Our article on how long hot water systems last goes into more detail.

How much does a hot water repair cost?

The cost comes down to which part needs replacing, the type of heater and how hard it is to get to. You get a fixed price before we start. Weekday visits between 7am and 5pm have no call-out fee. Nights, weekends and public holidays carry a call-out of $275 to $385 including GST. For a replacement, compare fitted prices for gas and electric units in the tool on this page.
