    Rainwater tanks

    Installing a rainwater tank

A rainwater tank collects the water from the roof through the downpipes. It needs a firm, level base, an overflow to the stormwater and a pump to supply toilets, a laundry or garden taps. A rain-to-mains switch, such as a RainBank, changes over to mains water when the tank runs low.

For a new home, the BASIX certificate may set the tank size and what it has to supply. More on gutters and downpipes.

    Before we start

    • Tell us the tank size and where it will go.
    • Let us know what the rainwater will supply, such as toilets, a laundry or garden taps.
    • Have the BASIX certificate handy if the tank is for a new home.

At a school in Baulkham Hills, we installed two 3,000 litre rainwater tanks. We formed and poured the concrete slabs, then put in the new tanks with new pumps and new signage. We connected the tanks to the existing outlets and stormwater lines, and to the water lines for the RainBank.

    How it works

    How a tank installation works

    1

Call 1300 301 354 or book online. Tell us about the tank and where it will go.

    2

We quote a fixed price, and work begins only when you say yes.

    3

We form and pour the slab, then install the tank and pump.

    4

We connect the pipes and the switch, put up the signage and test it all.

    The base

    A level slab

A full tank is heavy: every 1,000 litres of water weighs about a tonne. At the Baulkham Hills school, we formed and poured a concrete slab for each 3,000 litre tank before it went in.

    Mains backup

    When the tank runs low

A rain-to-mains switch, such as a RainBank, changes over to mains water when the tank runs low, so the toilets and taps on rainwater keep working. At the Baulkham Hills school, we connected the tanks to the water lines for the RainBank.

    Pricing

What does a rainwater tank installation cost?

The price is fixed before any work starts. It depends on:

    • The tank’s size and where it goes.
    • The base, such as a new concrete slab.
    • The pump and connections, including a rain-to-mains switch.

Checking the job and pricing it is free on weekdays between 7am and 5pm, when there is no call-out fee. Book online and you’ll save $50, once you accept the quote.

    Questions people ask us

    Rainwater tank questions

    Do you install rainwater tanks?
Yes. At a school in Baulkham Hills in November 2023, we installed two 3,000 litre rainwater tanks on new concrete slabs, with new pumps and new signage.
Does a rainwater tank need a slab?
It needs a firm, level base, because a full tank is heavy: every 1,000 litres weighs about a tonne. For the Baulkham Hills tanks, we formed and poured a concrete slab for each one.
What happens when the tank runs dry?
With a rain-to-mains switch, such as a RainBank, the supply changes over to mains water, so the toilets and taps on rainwater keep working.
    Where does the overflow go?
Into the stormwater. At the Baulkham Hills school, we connected the new tanks to the existing stormwater lines.
What size tank do I need?
It depends on your roof, what the rainwater will supply and, for a new home, what the BASIX certificate asks for. The Baulkham Hills school’s two tanks hold 3,000 litres each.
How much does a rainwater tank installation cost?
It depends on the tank’s size, the base it needs and the pump and connections. You get a fixed price before we start.
