The 3 questions to ask any plumber before they start

  1. “What is your NSW licence number?” Check it on the NSW Fair Trading licence check. Ours is 339748C.
  2. “What is the total price, fixed, in writing, before you start?”
  3. “Is there a call-out fee, and what does it cover?”

The answer that means walk away: “We’ll work it out when we get there.”

How to spot a cowboy plumber in 30 seconds: 7 tip-offs

  1. No licence number on the website, the van or the quote.
  2. Different business names on the van, the invoice and the website.
  3. Cash only, or a big discount for cash.
  4. A price that changes once they are inside.
  5. “Urgent” extras found within minutes, with nothing shown to you.
  6. No written warranty.
  7. Reviews that are all five stars, all recent, all in the same voice.

What “licensed” really means in NSW

The person doing plumbing, draining or gasfitting work must hold the right licence, and the business contracting with you must hold a contractor licence. Licensed work can be certified, which matters for insurance, for selling and for strata. “Fully qualified” is not the same as licensed. Ask for the number.

Read the reviews first, properly

Read the three-star and one-star reviews and look for the same complaint repeating, usually a price that changed on the day. Check the dates for bought batches. Read the owner’s replies: that is how you will be treated if something goes wrong.

The callout fee trap, explained. Our callout fee, revealed

A callout fee is a fee to turn up, then the job is priced once the plumber is in your bathroom. Ours is $0. We attend, look, and give you a fixed price in writing before any work starts. Say no and you owe nothing.

Why cheap plumbers cost more

A cheap hourly rate with no estimate, a temporary fix, a part swapped without finding the cause, or unlicensed work that has to be redone before you can sell or claim. A fixed price, a licence and a warranty are what make a plumber cheap over 12 months.

Hills plumber price check: what a fair job includes

  • A fixed price before work starts, parts, labour and GST included.
  • The licence number on the quote and the invoice.
  • The failed part shown to you.
  • A written warranty.
  • An arrival window, and a call if it changes.
  • The site left clean.

7 signs it can’t wait till 9am

Water still running with the meter off, sewage coming up a drain, a gas smell, water through a ceiling, your only toilet out, a hot water tank leaking from the body, or a burst inside a wall. Ring the 24-hour number for those. Everything else can usually wait for the day rate, and we will tell you which one you have.

Your local Hills District plumber

Our depot is in Seven Hills, a few minutes down Old Windsor Road from Baulkham Hills, which is why we can give real arrival windows across Castle Hill, Baulkham Hills, Kellyville, North Kellyville, Rouse Hill, Bella Vista, Norwest, Glenhaven, Dural, Cherrybrook, West Pennant Hills, Beaumont Hills, Box Hill, Kenthurst, Annangrove and Winston Hills. Twenty years of jobs in these streets means we know the two kinds of Hills house: the 1960s to 1980s homes around Castle Hill, Baulkham Hills and Winston Hills with earthenware drains, big trees and 40-year-old copper, and the newer estates at Kellyville, Rouse Hill, North Kellyville and Box Hill where the usual failures are flexible hoses, pressure valves and builder shortcuts.
