If you are searching for a leak detection specialist, you have probably already got a water bill that jumped, a damp patch that keeps coming back, or a meter that ticks over with every tap closed. Before you book anyone, read this. The difference between a detection-only visit and a detect-and-fix visit is the difference between one bill and two.
Find it and fix it today: 1300 301 354 or book online. You get an arrival window on the phone and a fixed price before any work starts. $0 call-out fee.
Detection-only vs detect and fix
Some leak services locate the leak, hand you a report and leave. The repair is a second booking, often with a second company, a second call-out and a second wait while the water keeps running. Our plumbers carry the detection gear and the repair gear in the same van: acoustic listening equipment, thermal imaging, pressure testing and a CCTV drain camera, alongside the pipe, fittings and tools to fix what they find. You get one visit, one fixed price in writing before the repair starts, and one invoice with the warranty on it.
Side by side: us vs the company you were about to call
We can only fill in our own column. The right-hand column is what to ask them before you give them your address.
| What to compare | All Day Plumbing | The company you were about to call |
|---|---|---|
| Call-out fee | $0, day or night. | Ask: is there a call-out, attendance or booking fee, and is it refunded if I don’t go ahead? |
| Price before work starts | Yes. A fixed price in writing before the plumber touches anything. Say no and you owe nothing. | Ask: will I get the total price in writing before you start, or an hourly rate? |
| Who turns up | A licensed plumber we employ. The business is run by a plumber with 20 years on the tools. | Ask: is the person coming your employee or a subcontractor, and what is their licence number? |
| Licence you can check | NSW Contractor Licence 339748C. Check it on the NSW Fair Trading licence check while you’re on the phone. | Ask for the licence number and check it. If they hesitate, that’s your answer. |
| Name on the licence | All Day Plumbing & Maintenance Pty Ltd, the same name on our website, our vans and your invoice. | Ask: does the name on your licence match the name on this website? |
| Hours | 24 hours, 7 days. | Ask: do you actually attend at night, or take the booking for the morning? |
| After-hours pricing | Told to you on the phone before anyone is dispatched. No surprise bill at 11pm. | Ask: what does the after-hours rate add, and when does it apply? |
| Warranty | On the work, printed on your invoice. | Ask: what is the warranty, and is it in writing? |
| Where the van comes from | Seven Hills, Sydney. Local plumber, local arrival times. | Ask: where are you based, and what is my arrival window? |
The 3 questions to ask any leak detection company
- “If you find it, can you fix it on the same visit?” If the answer is no, ask what the repair will cost you in time and call-outs.
- “What does the detection cost if you don’t find it?” Get the answer before they come, not after.
- “What is your plumbing licence number?” Leak detection ends with plumbing work. The person doing it needs a NSW plumbing licence, not just a piece of equipment. Ours is 339748C.
Where the water usually goes
In our experience the leaks that push a Sydney water bill up are usually one of five things: a concealed pipe under a slab or in a wall, a shower base or waterproofing failure, a toilet cistern that runs quietly around the clock, an underground service between the meter and the house, or a pool or irrigation line. Each one needs a different tool to find and a different repair to fix, and each one is something our plumbers do every week.
A quick test you can do right now
- Turn off every tap and appliance that uses water. Don’t forget the irrigation and the pool top-up.
- Read the water meter, wait 30 minutes with nothing running, and read it again.
- If it has moved, water is leaving somewhere. Take a photo of both readings and tell us when you call; it helps us quote the search over the phone.
5 things to check before you book anyone
- Get the total price in writing before they start. A plumber who does this every day answers straight away. “We’ll see when we get there” means the price is decided in your kitchen, after you’re committed.
- Check the licence number. Every NSW plumbing business must hold a contractor licence, and it takes 30 seconds to check online. Unlicensed work can void your insurance and cannot be certified.
- Match the names. The website, the licence, the van and the invoice should all carry the same business name. If they don’t, find out who you are actually paying.
- Ask who is coming. An employed, licensed plumber and a subcontractor picked up for the job are two different things when something goes wrong.
- Ask what happens if you say no. With us it’s simple: you owe nothing and we leave. Ask them the same question before you book.
