Sydney has more plumbing websites than plumbing companies. Some of the names you find on Google are one business trading under many different names, and some are booking desks that sell your job on to whichever plumber is free. This page shows you how to tell in 30 seconds, and puts our answers next to the questions you should ask them.
Skip the checking and book a licensed local plumber: 1300 301 354 or book online. You get an arrival window on the phone and a fixed price before any work starts. $0 call-out fee.
The 30-second check
- Look for a licence number on the website. NSW plumbing businesses are required to show their contractor licence number in advertising. No licence number on the page is a red flag on its own.
- Check the number on the NSW Fair Trading licence check. It tells you the licensee’s real name, the trading names attached to it, and whether the licence is current.
- Compare the names. If the name on the licence is not the name on the website, ask on the phone who you will actually be paying and who is turning up.
- Ask if the person coming is an employee. A business that subcontracts your job out cannot tell you who is coming, what they will charge or what warranty you will get until the job is done.
Side by side: us vs the company you were about to call
We can only fill in our own column. The right-hand column is what to ask them before you give them your address.
| What to compare | All Day Plumbing | The company you were about to call |
|---|---|---|
| Call-out fee | $0, day or night. | Ask: is there a call-out, attendance or booking fee, and is it refunded if I don’t go ahead? |
| Price before work starts | Yes. A fixed price in writing before the plumber touches anything. Say no and you owe nothing. | Ask: will I get the total price in writing before you start, or an hourly rate? |
| Who turns up | A licensed plumber we employ. The business is run by a plumber with 20 years on the tools. | Ask: is the person coming your employee or a subcontractor, and what is their licence number? |
| Licence you can check | NSW Contractor Licence 339748C. Check it on the NSW Fair Trading licence check while you’re on the phone. | Ask for the licence number and check it. If they hesitate, that’s your answer. |
| Name on the licence | All Day Plumbing & Maintenance Pty Ltd, the same name on our website, our vans and your invoice. | Ask: does the name on your licence match the name on this website? |
| Hours | 24 hours, 7 days. | Ask: do you actually attend at night, or take the booking for the morning? |
| After-hours pricing | Told to you on the phone before anyone is dispatched. No surprise bill at 11pm. | Ask: what does the after-hours rate add, and when does it apply? |
| Warranty | On the work, printed on your invoice. | Ask: what is the warranty, and is it in writing? |
| Where the van comes from | Seven Hills, Sydney. Local plumber, local arrival times. | Ask: where are you based, and what is my arrival window? |
Why the name matters when something goes wrong
A warranty is only worth the name on it. If the invoice says one thing, the licence says another and the website has since changed its name, you have nobody to hold to it. All Day Plumbing & Maintenance Pty Ltd has been the name on our licence, our vans and our invoices for 20 years, and it is the name on the warranty you get with every job.
5 things to check before you book anyone
- Get the total price in writing before they start. A plumber who does this every day answers straight away. “We’ll see when we get there” means the price is decided in your kitchen, after you’re committed.
- Check the licence number. Every NSW plumbing business must hold a contractor licence, and it takes 30 seconds to check online. Unlicensed work can void your insurance and cannot be certified.
- Match the names. The website, the licence, the van and the invoice should all carry the same business name. If they don’t, find out who you are actually paying.
- Ask who is coming. An employed, licensed plumber and a subcontractor picked up for the job are two different things when something goes wrong.
- Ask what happens if you say no. With us it’s simple: you owe nothing and we leave. Ask them the same question before you book.
Book a plumber whose name matches the licence, 24 hours, 7 days: 1300 301 354 or book online. You get an arrival window on the phone and a fixed price before any work starts. $0 call-out fee.
